What is play therapy?
Child Centered Play Therapy combines the element of play with a positive therapeutic relationship and a safe, consistent therapeutic environment to help children experience acceptance, understanding, and empathy.
Why is play therapy used for children?
Children are at a different place developmentally than adults and, therefore, require a type of therapy that fits with their development. Play is known to be the natural language of children.
What issues are addressed in play therapy?
These factors help the child in processing inner experiences and feelings that may be contributing to social, emotional, behavioral, and relational challenges such as the loss of a loved one, parental divorce, anger, anxiety, ADHD, difficulties making friends, as well as issues experienced through trauma and abuse.
What should I expect while my child is receiving play therapy?
In going through CCPT, children may experience improvements in emotion regulation, impulse control, self-esteem, healthier ways of expressing feelings, improved social skills, and more.
What is the role of the parent or caregiver during play therapy?
Parents are very much a part of the play therapy process for their children. Prior to meeting with the child, the play therapist will meet with the parents or primary caregivers to discuss their initial concerns as well as to gather additional information. Parents and caregivers will also participate in parent consultations every 4-6 sessions to discuss the child’s progress as well as to provide recommendations for skills and tools that parents and caregivers can implement at home. All parent/caregiver sessions are held without the child present so the adults can speak freely and so the child doesn’t feel talked about. Parent sessions can be held in person or through Telehealth.
