Why is My Past So Important in Therapy?

It is an important question.  Why is my past so important in therapy?  Is there any value going back into childhood?  I have made peace.  My issues are about today!

Exploring the past is very important in most cases to be able to address the issues of the here and now.  The past is what forms your foundation for life, your understanding of how to do relationships and how to relate to yourself.  Another way to think about this is your past has a lot to do with how you attach to yourself (your self worth), with others (how you relate in intimacy, social situations, parenting) and with God (Do you trust God?, Is God’s character good?, Will God always be there?).  Research shows that these types of attachments start in childhood (see the graph at this link to learn more: https://www.helpguide.org/articles/relationships-communication/attachment-and-adult-relationships.htm).

When one understands this attachment style one can start to address the issues in the here and now and work to form secure attachments.  Look at this link to learn a lot more about secure attachments:   https://www.helpguide.org/articles/relationships-communication/relationship-help.htm
Think about what would improve in your own life with understanding this about your past and how it shows up in your life today!
When Jesus was speaking about the greatest commandments this was the answer that was given:

Mark 12:30-31 30 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
